Burleigh Fire Dragons

When Burleigh Fire Dragons is paddling on the flat water, other clubs know that they are up against the stamina of paddlers who have the ethos of paddling from the heart. This is BFD’s Commitment for Success.

BFD officially became incorporated in 1999 from earlier ties with the Gold Coast Chinese Club.
Since that time, the club has experienced positive growth in all areas including membership, boats and facilities. In 2006, BFD moved to our now permanent home co-located with the Burleigh Sports Club where we are able to utilise the marked waterway of Lake Orr and surrounding Varsity Lakes and Burleigh Waters. Successful government grants have provided for the purchase of new boats and trailer with the construction of a fenced shelter and sheds currently in the process of being built.

BFD encourages participation at all levels of physical ability and paddling experience, including those who have been physically challenged. Member’s ages range from 13 to 60 + years covering the paddling categories of Youth (13-17), Premiers (18-39), Masters (40-49), Grand Masters (50-59) and Great Grand Masters (60+). Our training programs are conducted over four sessions per week to allow for those who wish to participate socially or competitively, and to provide flexibility to members to enable attendance to fit in with their personal and professional lives.

BFD has consistently competed and won a plethora of medals at local, State, National and World Club Crew Championships over the years. BFD and its members have also competed victoriously at various international events throughout Asia and the world, including locations of Hong Kong, Macau, Penang, Shanghai, Johannesburg, Prague and Toronto. BFD members have also been selected to represent Queensland and Australia at National and World Championships.

BFD and members are proactive participants of the community. Off the water, BFD provides marshals for the Gold Coast Marathon, supports Cancer Abreast, has participated in the Relay for Life for Cancer and raised funds for food and community villages in Africa. We have participated in the Palm-Beach Currumbin Riverfest and the Gold Coast Show Tug-o-War Corporate Challenge.

On the water BFD’s support has extended to providing dragon boating experiences for the visiting USA Arizona Youth Grid Iron Team, local school youth activities, Gold Coast Family Support Group, the Ballina Riverfestival and local corporate team building events. Yearly, BFD supports the Prostate Cancer Paddling Challenge and Kids In Need Regattas.
